Accuplacer

https://www.accuplacer.org/#/systemRequirementThe ACCUPLACER WritePlacer measures your ability to write effectively, which is critical to academic success. Your writing sample will be scored on the basis of how effectively it communicates a whole message to the readers for the stated purpose. Your score will be based on your ability to express, organize, and support your opinions and ideas, not the position you take on the essay topic. Additional information concerning the written essay may be found on the College Board ACCUPLACER Website. ASU uses ONLY the WritePlacer portion of the exam.  You will be given 60 minutes to write an essay on an assigned topic. There will be no multiple-choice portion of the exam.

Information regarding university requirements and first-year composition placement can be found in the ASU General Catalog and Department of English. Students may not use the ACCUPLACER WritePlacer exam to achieve credit for first-year English Composition courses. If you have questions regarding your composition course placement at ASU, please visit Placement Information | First-Year Composition Courses and contact your undergraduate academic advisor.

If you need to take an ACCUPLACER exam for admissions or placement at another institution that is not ASU, please call our office at 480-965-7146 to make the appropriate Proctoring Service arrangements because your institution may require a different portion of exam(s) within the Accuplacer test suite. Please note fees may vary depending on the exam(s) required and associated time.

Three ways to take the ACCUPLACER

Option 1: Online

To take your exam online select ACCUPLACER ONLINE when registering. When you test you must be in a private quiet location. Accuplacer’s policies require that you test alone and undisturbed, therefore do not select a public location. A valid (unexpired) ID is required. After registering you will receive an email with a testing voucher and instructions. The email with the voucher information will come from University Testing and Scanning Services with a [email protected] email address. Please check your junk/spam folder of the email address you used to register for the exam.  The testing voucher you receive is valid for 90 days from the date it is sent to you. If you do not take your exam within 90 days, you will need to register and pay the exam registration fee again.  Cell phones, headsets, dual-monitor use, and dictionaries are prohibited during the exam.

Computer Requirements

Visit ACCUPLACER's minimum system requirements necessary to run ACCUPLACER.

Option 2: In-Person on the ASU Tempe campus

Register to take the exam in person at the Tempe Campus. Selecting exam name = ACCUPLACER In-Person (Tempe) when registering.

Option 3: At a testing center near you

To take your exam at another college or university with an in-person proctor call 480-965-7146 or email [email protected] to coordinate an appointment.

Students who use this option must locate a proctor at an educational institution that is willing and able to administer the exam and is a member of the NCTA Proctoring Network (NPN)  Students are responsible for paying any proctoring fees associated with this option. ASU will not pay any fees for tests that are delivered remotely.  When registering you will select the By Appointment option and pay your fees.  After registering, you will need to print the Proctor Security Agreement [PDF, 86 KB] for your proctor to complete.  Institutions administering the ACCUPLACER exam must be members of the NCTA Proctoring Network.  The Proctor Security Agreement must be submitted to ASU PRIOR to any testing instructions being sent to the identified proctor and you will be notified when the testing arrangements have been approved. You MUST allow at least 2 – 5 business days for testing arrangements to be completed OR International students who have been admitted to ASU may take the ACCUPLACER exam in their home country.  Students will need to locate a proctor/invigilator who can read and write in English. The exam name when registering for this option is ACCUPLACER REMOTE.  After registering and paying your fees online, you will need to complete and submit the International Proctor Agreement [DOC, 29 KB] to ASU PRIOR to testing instructions being released to your identified proctor. You will be notified when the testing arrangements have been approved. At that time, you will then need to make an appointment with the local test proctor and pay any test administration fees assessed by this proctor. Please allow at least 3 – 5 business days for these arrangements to be completed.  You must schedule and take your exam within 30 days of registering for your exam.  If you do not take your exam within 30 days you will be required to register and pay your fees again.

Reschedule

The test fee may be transferred to another test date under the following conditions:

  1. Space is available on the requested test date and the new appointment is scheduled within 90 days from when your voucher was issued to ensure it is still valid. If you are unsure when it expires, please contact our office.
  2. All transfers must be made ON or BEFORE your originally scheduled exam.  After the originally scheduled exam date, a full registration fee will be required in order to test.
  3. To transfer the test date, call 480-965-7146 or email [email protected] to pay a $15.00 transfer fee with a credit card.

Admission

  • Same-day appointments are not available.
  • On the day of the test, the student must present an original, valid (not expired) form of photo ID. A photocopy is not acceptable. Examples of acceptable forms of ID would be a valid driver's license, passport or student ID. The name on the ID must match the registered name.
  • A clear workspace is required and can only include a photo ID, monitor, mouse, keyboard, blank scratch paper, and pencil. All other items must be removed from the table/desk.
  • If testing online, you must be prepared to virtually check-in at the time of your appointment. Late examinees may need to be rescheduled (a rescheduling fee applies). Starting the exam late impacts other students’ scheduled appointments. We ask that you make every effort to be on time. We recognize unforeseen situations may arise in which case, please contact our office at 480-965-7146 or email [email protected] promptly to discuss options.
