CLEP

Announcements

Please be advised that properly wearing a face cover is mandatory in all ASU buildings, and face coverings are to be worn for the duration of the exam. Single-layer neck fleece covers, also known as gaiters, and face coverings with valves do not satisfy the requirement for use of a face covering on campus.

Please do not come to the testing center if you are feeling ill or experiencing symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of smell or taste, sore throat, muscle pain).  If you are feeling ill on the day of the exam or if you believe you have been exposed in the last 14 days to someone who was currently positive or awaiting results for COVID-19, please contact our office to reschedule the exam.

For additional details about ASU’s COVID-19 mitigation strategy, visit the ASU Coronavirus FAQs.

Due to the current situation, the  testing schedule is published one month at a time. Please contact our office at 480-965-7146 or uts@asu.edu if you do not find an appointment that meets your needs.

A message from College Board: CLEP Test Takers Whose Registration Tickets Expired

Test takers whose registration tickets expired on or after March 1 due to the impact of COVID-19 are eligible to receive a CLEP exam voucher that would allow them to take an exam any time between now and June 30th, 2021. If you purchased a registration ticket that has expired, please contact CLEP Services by emailing clep@info.collegeboard.org with "Exam Voucher – Coronavirus" in the subject line or by calling 800-257-9558. When contacting CLEP, please include your name, address, telephone number, and CLEP exam subject. Please note that these vouchers are for students who purchased their registration tickets. If you registered for your CLEP exam using a voucher code from your school or another entity, please contact the person who provided the original voucher.

CLEP

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®) tests cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. A college usually grants the same amount of credit to students earning satisfactory scores on the CLEP® test as it grants to students successfully completing that course. For additional information about CLEP® visit https://clep.collegeboard.org/.

Equivalency

A list of available CLEP® examinations and the ASU course equivalents can be found in the ASU General Catalog. A link to archived catalogs can also be found on this page.

For further information, please consult the appropriate academic department. For information about language proficiency exams and foreign language placement, please refer to information provided by the School of International Letters & Cultures.

Restrictions

CLEP® credit is not given at ASU when any of the following situations apply:

  1. It duplicates credit previously earned by the student at the university or accepted by the university for courses completed elsewhere.
  2. It is more elementary than a course in the same field in which the student has already received credit.
  3. An ASU student has already earned more than 60 semester hours of comprehensive credit (proficiency exams).

Registration

CLEP testing sessions are available on average twice a week, all year long - including summer and winter break! Due to the current situation, the schedule is published one month at a time.

CLEP fees total $124 and must be paid in two separate payments: a $35 non-refundable administrative fee paid to ASU and an exam fee of $89 paid directly to CLEP. Registration fees are non-refundable so please ensure you require the exam and are signed up for the correct one.

You must first register with CLEP and pay the non-refundable exam fee through their My Account portal.  You will be issued a Ticket ID; this Ticket ID will be valid for six (6) months from the date of purchase.  This Ticket ID only covers the cost of your (1) exam. To reserve a seat in our testing center and schedule a specific date and time for your exam, you must register and pay your non-refundable, $35 administrative fee on our registration site.  You must bring your valid Ticket ID to your test session.  If you do not have your Ticket ID or it has expired we will not be able to allow you to test.

CLEP exams are only administered at the Testing Center located on the ASU-Tempe campus.

Ticket IDs are only valid for one attempt and cannot be reused.

Reschedule

You may reschedule your exam appointment to another test date under the following conditions:

  1. Space is available on the requested test date.
  2. Your CLEP Ticket ID is valid on the transfer date of your transfer appointment. It is your responsibility to ensure your Ticket ID is valid. If your Ticket ID expires, you will need to purchase a new CLEP exam Ticket ID. To check the expiration date, visit CLEP. The testing center cannot verify expiration dates as it does not have access to CLEP information.
  3. All transfers must be made ON or BEFORE your originally scheduled appointment.  After the originally scheduled appointment date, a full administrative fee will be required.
  4. To transfer the test date, call 480-965-7146 or come in to the Testing Services office to pay a $15.00 transfer fee with a credit card.

Time

All exams except the College Composition with Essay are 90 minutes long, but examinees should allow 2 hours for the total appointment time. The College Composition with Essay exam is 2 hours in length. Examinees should allow 2.5 hours for the total appointment time.

CLEP® for DANTES

As a fully funded test center, eligible military test takers will not have to pay the exam fee and the administrative fee. You must clearly specify your military status when purchasing an exam in My Account in order to receive DANTES funding. The DANTES Eligibility Chart provides information about who can benefit from DANTES funding. CLEP exams for civil service employees, inactive guard or reserve personnel, and spouses and dependents not listed on the chart are not funded through DANTES. To schedule your exam in our office, please call us at 480-965-7146. Do not register online as this process will not waive your administrative fee.

Retake

You must wait three months before retaking the same CLEP® test. A new CLEP ticket ID and registration fee must be purchased for each retake.
